Journal #56 -- Who are you?

Read the poems. Explain the message in each. What do they have in common? How are they different? Write your own version of one of these poems, attempting to answer the question:  Who are you?

But someday

But someday, somebody'll

stand up and talk about me

and write about me

black and beautiful

and sing about me

and put on plays about me!

I reckon it'll be

me myself!

Yes, it'll be me.

-Langston Hughes

I'm Nobody

I'm nobody! Who are you?

Are you nobody, too?

Then there's a pair of us - don't tell!

They'd banish us, you know.

How dreary to be somebody!

How public like a frog

To tell your name the livelong day

To an admiring bog!

-Emily Dickinson
